Turn it off or Leave it on?

This is a very common question among computer users.   Should I turn the computer ON if I am not using it for a while?

YES.  Our answer is YES.

Frequent on-off cycles will shorten the life of the computer.  When the computer is running, the components get warm and even hot, so they expand.  When the computer is turned off, the components cool and they shrink.  These heating cooling cycles can weaken the tiny connections and components in the electronic circuitry, eventually resulting in computer failure.

If you are concerned about the energy usage of the computer while it is on, think about the energy that would be used to manufacture a replacement computer.

A compromise would be to put the computer on a sleep mode (HIBERNATE), this way, the electronics will still stay warm, but not hot.  If you are going to be off for a long period of time, then definitely, shut the computer off.
